Audiences, Lists, and Segments
In short
Your audience is made up of subscribers — the people who can receive a Broadcast. Subscribers are grouped into lists (durable, named collections such as "All employees" or "Newsletter opt-ins") and can be narrowed further into segments (a filtered slice of one or more lists based on subscriber data). When you send an Edition, you choose the lists and segments that define exactly who gets it.
Why it matters
Targeting the right people is the difference between a relevant message and an unsubscribe. Lists give you a stable, reusable audience; segments let you tailor each Broadcast without maintaining dozens of near-duplicate lists. Good audience structure also keeps your deliverability healthy — you send to people who expect to hear from you, and you avoid subscribers who have opted out.
How it works
- Subscribers carry attributes (email, name, and custom fields like department, region, or plan) that you can personalize and filter on.
- Lists are the containers you add subscribers to. A subscriber can belong to more than one list.
- Segments are saved filters that evaluate subscriber attributes and behavior (for example, "region = West AND opened the last Broadcast"). A segment updates automatically as subscriber data changes.
- Suppression applies on top of everything: opt-outs and bounces are excluded from every Broadcast regardless of list or segment membership.
Example: You keep one list, "Customers." For a regional announcement you build a segment "Customers where region = West," then send the Edition to that segment. Next month you reuse the same list with a different segment — no new list required. (Confirm the exact filter fields and steps in your account.)
