Set Fallback Text for Tokens

Provide default text so personalized content reads well when data is missing.

Personalization tokens pull a subscriber's data into your Edition — a first name, a company, a city. But not every subscriber record is complete. When a token has no value and no fallback, your copy can break in awkward ways: "Hi ," or "Your renewal for is due." A fallback (also called a default value) is the safe text shown when the underlying field is empty, so the sentence still reads naturally for everyone.

Before you begin

  • Know which token you're using and the field it maps to (for example, a first-name or company token).
  • Decide on neutral fallback wording that fits the sentence for a subscriber whose data is missing — for example, "there" for a first name, or "your account" for an account name.
  • Have the Edition open in the editor where you insert or edit personalization tokens. (confirm the exact steps in your account)

Steps

  1. In your Edition, place the cursor where the personalized value should appear, then insert the personalization token you want.
  2. Open the token's settings or edit the token so you can set its default/fallback value. (confirm the exact steps in your account)
  3. Enter the fallback text — the words shown when the field is empty. Keep it lowercase or capitalized to match how it sits in the sentence.
  4. Read the full sentence both ways in your head: once with a real value, once with the fallback. Adjust wording so both read cleanly.
  5. Save the Edition, then send yourself a test or use the preview to check a subscriber whose field is blank.

Result

Subscribers with data see their personalized value; subscribers missing that field see your fallback text instead. No empty gaps, stray punctuation, or half-finished sentences appear in the delivered Broadcast.
